The Issues with High Asset Divorce Playing out with Pitt-Jolie

Going through a divorce is tough on anyone. After all, you're completely severing from the life you know and striking out into the unknown, which is one of the scariest things we can do as humans. For most people, the sordid details of the divorce remain a secret. For some, however, especially those in the spotlight or those with a degree of wealth, every element and every awful rumor becomes fodder for the public.

Such is the case with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's breakup, which has become one of the highest-profile divorces in recent memory. First, there were allegations of child abuse on the part of Pitt. These were later proved unfounded, but for someone in the public eye, the mere suggestion is enough to do irreparable damage.

The two have traded hurtful barbs throughout the process and every quote becomes a headline. Pitt's people asked the courts to seal the documents regarding their children, but the child custody agreement the couple agreed upon was made public and was commented on ad nauseum.

The case underlines many of the extraordinary issues that high-asset couples must deal with when they divorce. It may not be to the same degree, but seeing your name dragged through the mud or brought up in the local press can hurt you emotionally and damage your reputation in the community.

If you're going through a high-asset divorce, it may be a good idea to speak with an attorney who specializes in these types of splits. He or she might be able to help you navigate the process while keeping your reputation intact.
